    operator overloading

    Does php support operator overloading?

How much is operator overloading important for an object oriented language?

I don't know for sure, but I don't think it does. My question is if you don't know whether operator overloading is important, why did you ask the first question?

It doesn't, and probably won't any time soon. (See Bug 9331.)

Errrr. There's this, but I get the feeling it's not what you're looking for. I don't see the point in it myself, but then when I started learning I also laughed at how pointless the assignment operator (=&) seemed. The same operator that now reduces the workload of my current project by around 400% had it not existed.
