Software Review:
Adobe Photoshop 4.0
Part 1
By Scott Clark
Industry standard graphic software for professionals
Professional graphic artists have been talking about the merits of Adobe Photoshop since 1989. This industry leading photo design and production tool is still probably a major component of the graphics department of most large corporations, but are Web developers able to rely on it to be their all-in-one graphic toolbox? We'll take a look at Photoshop 4.0 with that angle in mind.
Photoshop is feature-rich--basically a darkroom in a software package--and enables those who know it well to create professional looking graphics for presentations, advertising, magazines, newspapers, and now, Web pages. The tool includes support for transparent, interlaced GIF files, Portable Network Graphics (PNG), Progressive JPEG and Adobe's own Portable Document Format (PDF).

As with the other graphics tools we've reviewed, installation is a simple process which most people will have no problems with if they've ever installed software. There are a lot of extra third-party goodies on the CD-ROM which I didn't install, but hey, I wanted to focus on Photoshop in this review. If you're a fan of printed documentation, as I am, you'll be happy to know that Photoshop comes with a 390 page User Guide to get you going...and you'll need it!
