Chalk Effect in Photoshop 6 By Nick Ustinov Revised by Nathan Segal,* May/2001 To get started, create a new image with a Black Background and White type (the font used here was Comic Sans MS Bold). Be aware that as you create type, it resides on a different layer from the background. In order for this effect to work, you need to merge the layers. Hit CTRL+E (or CMD+E on the Macintosh). Next, use Select: Color Range to select the text, inverting it if necessary so only the text is selected. Go to Filter: Noise: Add Noise. Set an amount of 150, with Distribution set to Gaussian and the Monochromatic checkbox enabled. Deselect the text and access Filter: Stylize: Diffuse with Mode: Normal, selected. Go back to the Filter menu and choose Stylize: Find Edges. To complete the effect, choose Filter: Distort: Ripple and set the Amount to 75 and the Size to Medium. That's it.
