Creating Burning Text in Photoshop

By Nick Ustinov

The classic fire effect. Start a new grayscale image using a black background and white foreground. Make sure to leave some space at the top for the flames. If you are using Photoshop 4.0 don't forget to merge down the type layer by hitting Ctrl-E (or Cmd-E on Mac).

1 Rotate image 90 degrees CW. (Image /Rotate /90 CW)
Use Filter /Stylize /Wind... twice with settings Wind/Right.
Use Filter /Stylize /Diffuse... with default settings. Then setImage /Rotate /90 CCW.
2 Fine, now Filter /Blur /Gaussian Blur with setting of 2.0
3 Use Filter /Distort /Ripple with default settings
4 Now, Mode /Indexed Color
Mode/Color Tables choose Black Body...

If you are having problems with colors, this means you didn't start with a grayscale image. No big deal, just do Mode >Grayscale before changing to Indexed Color and applying color tables.

5 Burn baby, burn!
